What You Should Do Before Your Dental Implant Surgery

Prepare Soft Meals

Your gum tissue may be slightly sore the first couple of days following your procedure. For this reason, you’ll need to avoid spicy foods or hard foods such as fruits, raw vegetables, and nuts. These foods may irritate the surgical site and cause pain and discomfort.

Moreover, your dentist will recommend sticking to liquids and soft foods. It’s best to take a trip to the local grocery days before your appointment to prepare your meals ahead of time. You may process fruits and veggies into juices or smoothies so you won’t miss out on your body’s dietary requirements.

Confirm Prescription Medications and Supplements

You’ll want to ask your physician and dentist about the medications and supplements you can and can’t take before surgery. They might instruct you to stop taking NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and herbal supplements that may lead to excessive post-operative bleeding. Since each patient is different, you’ll need to obtain and follow their recommendations for your specific situation.

Adjust Your Schedule

You’ll want to dedicate the first few days after surgery to rest. Engaging in strenuous activities increases the risk of bleeding. Although some patients return to their routine after three days, it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid planning important events until a week after your appointment.

Secure Your Ride Home

Your dentist will use some form of sedation to ensure your comfort during the surgical procedure. Since the effects of the anesthesia don’t usually wear off immediately after your appointment, you’ll want to have a family member or friend drive you home.
