Time to Replace Dentures? These Are the Signs

March 06, 2023

Despite their strength, dentures in Lake Worth need to be replaced from time to time. That is why you should always be alert and periodically examine their condition. However, what are the signs that it is time to change them? Let’s look at the signs that indicate it’s time to visit your dentist for a new pair of dentures.

Loose Dentures

Dentures will loosen over time. This is the result of the natural progression of underlying bone loss. When teeth are still in the jaw, the roots stimulate the nerves to keep the existing bone intact. When teeth are missing, the jaw no longer receives this stimulation. As a result, bone atrophy occurs over time, leading to loose and shifting dentures.

Uncomfortable Dentures

Originally, dentures were made to fit a unique tooth shape. New dentures fit more comfortably over the gums. However, as the bone underneath deteriorates, the fit can change causing discomfort.

Gum Sores

If a denture no longer fits properly it can slip over the gum tissue. This constant friction can cause sores and lesions in the mouth that can make the mouth vulnerable to oral infections.

Dentures Are Hard to Clean

This can be caused due to changes in the fit, for example, when it’s tightly fitted there’s no space left for food particles and debris. As the denture becomes looser this space increases and more waste will be present. This is a sign that your dentures need to be replaced.

Sudden or Severe Pain

Dentures not only replace missing teeth, they can also keep the jaw joints in the proper position. Over time, as bone loss occurs, this can change. As a result, pain and swelling may happen. If you experience headaches, or ear, neck, back, or shoulder discomfort, see your dentist immediately to check your dentures.
