Tips for Eating with Brand New Dentures

January 19, 2022

There’s nothing like wearing brand new dentures in Lake Worth. Besides getting all your teeth back, your face looks younger, and you feel good about yourself. Although it can take a week or more to get used to eating with your artificial teeth, we’re here to give you a few tips to help you go through your adjustment period.

How to Eat With Your Brand New Dentures

Start Slowly with Soft Foods

For the first few days, you’ll want to avoid placing undue stress on your gum tissues and jaw muscles. Starting slowly with plenty of liquids and soft foods that won’t require excessive chewing will help you prevent gum irritation. However, be sure to avoid holding liquids in your mouth because this can loosen your bottom dentures.

Some examples of foods that are easy to chew and swallow include the following:

  • Soups
  • Applesauce
  • Cooked cereal
  • Pudding
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes

Check Your Food’s Temperature

Since dentures have an insulating effect, judging how hot or cold your food is can be extremely challenging. Unless you’re willing to run the risk of burning your mouth while eating hot foods, it’s best to look for visual cues such as steam. Another way to avoid scalding yourself is to check the heat by carefully testing the food on your lips before you put it in your mouth.

Steer Clear of Spicy Foods

As your gums adjust to having dentures over them, don’t be surprised if they’re a little bit sore. The last thing you want is to get chili on any painful areas. If you want to avoid burning or stinging, stay away from spicy foods.

Chew on Both Sides at the Same Time

Most people with natural teeth chew on one side of their mouths at a time. However, chewing this way with dentures could cause your new teeth to slip out of place. The best way to prevent your dentures from rocking around is to chew small, manageable pieces of food on both sides at the same time.
