Why Do My Dentures Smell?

June 15, 2021

Perhaps you’ve been using your dentures in Lake Worth for a while, and you suddenly notice that they smell bad. Accumulation of odor-causing bacteria due to irregular or poor cleaning habits is a common reason why your artificial teeth can smell bad. Let’s take a closer look at both of these underlying reasons.

Top Reasons for Bad-Smelling Dentures

Excessive Bacteria Buildup

When your denture cleaning habits are anything but regular, millions of bacteria will build up in your mouth. Unfortunately, the bacteria will produce yeast under your dentures, causing them to constantly smell bad. Thankfully, you can address this issue by maintaining proper oral hygiene and by visiting your dentist every six months.

Irregular Denture Cleaning

While proper denture cleaning is a must, doing it on a regular basis is even more important. Just like your natural teeth, your artificial ones have to be cleaned at least twice a day. Aside from preventing the buildup of plaque and tartar, cleaning your dentures will also cause them to smell better.

How to Prevent Smelly Dentures

Without proper maintenance, dentures can smell really bad. To avoid this problem, practice these methods:

  • Remove Them Regularly

Keeping your dentures in your mouth isn’t something your dentist would recommend. It’s best to remove them after eating anything so that you can clean them out before you wear them again. While you’re at it, run warm water over them to get rid of food debris and other odor-causing particles.

  • Clean Your Mouth After Removing Them

Gently brush your natural teeth, tongue, the roof of your mouth, and cheeks using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Be sure to rid your gums of any remaining denture adhesive.

  • Soak Them Overnight

Never let your dentures stay in your mouth while you sleep at night. You can get rid of the smell by soaking them in a mild denture-soaking solution overnight.
