The Different Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional Bridge

This option consists of a false tooth or teeth held securely in place using dental crowns that are cemented onto every abutment tooth. However, the traditional bridge is also a popular choice among patients who have natural teeth and a gap on either side created by their missing tooth or teeth.

Cantilever Bridge

While the cantilever bridge can be a lot like the traditional bridge, the dental crown holds in place the pontic in a cantilever bridge. The dental crown is cemented to only a single abutment tooth. This option can work for patients who only have one natural tooth next to the space left by their missing teeth.

Maryland Bridge

This is a winged bridge, also a lot similar to the traditional bridge. It uses two natural abutment teeth on both sides of the space created by missing teeth. However, the big difference is that the Maryland bridge makes use of a metal or porcelain framework that’s securely bonded onto the back portions of the abutment teeth. This option can only work for patients with natural teeth on each side of the missing teeth’ space.

Implant-Supported Bridge

This uses dental implants to hold the bridge in its proper position. This is known to be the strongest and most stable option because it requires two surgical procedures. The first one is for the placement of the implants into the patient’s jawbone. And lastly, the second one is for the placement of the dental bridge.
