What is Periodontal/Gum Treatment?

Periodontal treatment focuses on diagnosing and preventing periodontal (gum) disease. This specialty also emphasizes treating gum inflammation.

Periodontal disease is caused by an accumulation of plaque and tartar buildup. Plaque is a white, sticky substance composed of thousands of bacteria. When plaque is left untreated, it hardens onto the enamel creating tartar. Plaque and tartar can be found on the teeth and along the gum line.

Am I At-Risk?

You may be at-risk for periodontal disease if you participate in the following:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking
  • Poor Oral Hygiene
  • Medical History of Health Issues

Types of Periodontal/Gum Treatment

Our goal is to get you the smile of your dreams. Here are our treatment options:

  • Scaling and Root Planing
Process involves removing plaque and tartar from the teeth and along the gum line. Hygienist uses a scaling instrument to effectively remove plaque and tartar from the surface.
  • Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy
A high-powered laser emits energy to vaporize away diseased tissue. This mechanism treats gum inflammation by detecting melanin and water levels in the mouth. This method of treatment heals blood vessels quickly with little to no discomfort.
  • Gum Graft
A gum grafting procedure uses gum tissue to treat receding gums. This is a good option for individuals who have lost a significant amount of gum tissue due to periodontal disease. If tooth roots are exposed as a result of gum recession, gum grafting is needed to avoid sensitive teeth. Your periodontist will remove healthy gum tissue from the roof of the mouth and stitch it to the receding area.
