Root Canal Treatment: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Preparing the Area

Your dentist begins by administering a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and its surrounding area. Once the numbing sensation takes effect, they place a small rubber or vinyl sheet called a dental dam over your affected tooth. The dental dam works to isolate the area and reduce the risk of infection by harmful bacteria found in the rest of your mouth.

Step 2: Creating Access to the Root Canals

The dentist creates access to the root canals and pulp chamber by drilling a small opening along the biting surface or the back of the affected tooth. This small hole fully exposes the damaged nerves and blood vessels.

Step 3: Removing the Damaged Tooth Pulp and Nerves

Using special root canal tools, the dentist removes the damaged and dead pulp tissue and nerves from the inside of the tooth and its root. The affected tooth will no longer have the ability to feel pain at this point.

Step 4: Disinfecting the Area

The dentist irrigates the area with antibacterial and antiseptic solutions to wash away the traces of the infected pulp and disinfect the area.

Step 5: Shaping the Root Canals

Flexible root canal tools are inserted into the canals to shape and prepare them for the filling material. Once they’re shaped, the dentist thoroughly cleans them to eliminate the remaining debris.

Step 6: Applying the Filling

Gutta-percha, a rubber-like, thermoplastic filling material, is applied in the root canals before the dentist uses an adhesive cement sealer to set it in place. This process ensures the tooth’s protection against reinfection.

Step 7: Placing a Crown

A crown is placed over the treated tooth to restore its appearance, add strength and stability, and prevent further damage.
