How the Flu Affects Your Oral Health: What You Need to Know

May 13, 2023

The flu is a common viral infection that affects millions of people every year. While most people associate the flu with symptoms like coughing, fever, and body aches, it’s important to remember that the flu can also impact your oral health; read on to find out with your Lake Worth dentist how this occurs.

The Flu and How It Affects Your Oral Health

Dry Mouth

One of the most common oral health issues associated with the flu is dry mouth. Having a cold or flu often leads to nasal congestion, causing one to breathe through their mouth more frequently than usual, particularly when sleeping, causing dry mouth.

This can make it difficult to swallow, speak, and even breathe. Dry mouth can also increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease, as saliva plays an important role in neutralizing harmful bacteria in your mouth.

To alleviate dry mouth symptoms when suffering from a cold or flu, it is advisable to:

  • Drink plenty of water to maintain hydration
  • Use sugar-free cough drops or gum to stimulate saliva flow
  • Maintain your regular brushing and flossing routine to promote the production of saliva and eliminate harmful bacteria

Sinus Pain and Toothache

If you experience tooth pain during or after a bout of the flu, it could be related to sinus pressure. When you have a virus like a cold, it increases the risk of sinusitis, an infection that can place pressure on your sinus cavities located just above your back teeth.

This pressure can make it feel as if you have a tooth infection or toothache. Usually, the symptoms will clear up on their own, but if they don’t, you may need antibiotics from your doctor.
